Specialist apprenticeships registered with SBATC have a two year time-served period during which the apprentice will attend college or a training provider for varying periods of time dependent on the occupation. There is no skills test at the conclusion of the training with SCQF level 5 apprenticeships although apprentices will be asked to complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the work and learning that has occurred in the workplace.

Throughout the duration of such specialist and civil engineering apprenticeships both the apprentice and the employer are bound by the SBATC collectively bargained terms and conditions of apprenticeship which include provisions for matters such as pay, working hours, overtime and holidays.
