THE JAMES BIRNIE AWARD FOR CRAFT EXCELLENCE

The concept of an annual award for craft excellence was the brainchild of Jim Birnie. A past President of Scottish Building Federation in 1992, 1995 & 1996, he was instrumental in the modernisation of the Federation and his work, particularly in the area of wages & conditions, has resulted in new and improved conditions for the industry as a whole.

Jim sat on the Wages & Conditions committee of Scottish Building Federation for many years and was awarded the MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours of 1999 for services to Working Conditions in the Construction Industry.

Wanting to give something back to the industry that had provided him with a good and rewarding career, he approached the SBATC with the idea of an award for the young people of the industry. The SBATC were delighted to take up Jim's offer and as such nominations were invited in early 2000 from colleges and employers for craft apprentices who had excelled in their training.
